Beit Arabia Center for Peace In Memory of Nuha Makadma-Sweidan and Rachel Corrie ICAHD Summer Work Camp Invitation to volunteers when: August 8th -21st where: Anata - East Jerusalem Information and Registration Because of the trauma caused to the Shawamreh family due to the repeated demolitions, ICAHD will rebuild the home as an act of resistance, but will rebuild it as a peace center on the Shawamreh land. The peace center will be named Beit Arabia ("Arabia's House") after Arabia Shawamreh, the mother of seven who has suffered such physical and mental abuse simply trying to provide a home for her family under conditions of Occupation. The center will also be dedicated to the memory of Nuha Makadma Sweidan, a pregnant Palestinian woman killed in Gaza in March 2003 when an Israeli bulldozer demolished her home on top of her, and of Rachel Corrie, an American volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement who was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer two weeks after Nuha, as she was trying to protect a Palestinian home in Gaza from demolition. The peace center will house a permanent exhibit of the ongoing tragedy of house demolitions. It will serve as a center for educational activities, study tours, activist events and peace-building between Palestinians and Israelis. Structure of the Camp ? Volunteers from the USA & Europe, together with Palestinians and Israelis, will be participating in the construction of the center and will landscaping the grounds around it. Participants will also help paint a mural with U.S. artist Mike Alewitz, who has designed and created political murals in the USA, Ireland, Nicaragua and Chernobyl. Tents and toilet facilities will be separate for men and women. Food will be prepared on site by Arabia Shawamreh and our volunteers. The food will be vegetarian, but meat will be available. We have the support of all the different groups in Anata for holding this peace camp. As you know, the authorities do not support of our activities and the army and civil administration might try to interfere with the building. Please take that into consideration. We will instruct the participants daily about how to act in that case. Please wear modest clothing.
