No Contradiction by Chad 12:01pm Tue Oct 23 '01 print comment The conflict between the left and anarchism has always been an internal conflict, and it always will be. While various attempts have been made by both leftists and anarchists to break that paradigm, it has never changed. Leftism, generally, places certain human values over and above tradition and the free market. Anarchism takes the leftist critique in a more extreme direction, by placing the roots of the problem at the actual exercise of power, regardless of the motive. Folks like Foucault, Chomsky, the authors of Empire, and the shards of Paris 1968 are more relevant than the ancient history of the First International. They corrently identify the problem of power as implicit more than explicit, structural, rather than overt. They cast a light on the problems of authoritarian consciousness, as a necessary complement to political economy. The dialogue between modern anarchist trends and old leftist trends has been fruitful. Today, many leftists are much more open to lifestyle issues - like veganism - than in the past. Some margins within major religion - like Liberation Theology - have embraced anarchist ideas, like that of direct democracy instead of representative democracy. Finally, many leftists have realized the problems of turning political issues into cookie cutter solutions for the 'masses.' What this means in practice, is that the greatest influence of anarchist ideas is not the result of individual anarchists becoming well known or influential, but the percolating of ideas beyond the narrow anarchist circles. This isn't a bad thing, but it is sad to see that the most committed anarchists don't understand it. The lesson is that it doesn't matter of 'the masses' get it, or join little anarcho-groups. What matters is the power of ideas. The good ones eventually get used, the bad ones turn out not to work. As for the anarchists themselves, thier problem in the West for the past few decades, has been a willingness to turn inwards, like a cult. By emphasizing things like punk fashion, sympathy for urban riots, extremely difficult lifestyle choices like veganism or squatting, they make it more difficult to spread thier ideas. 'Anarchism' today is a form of youthful consumption of ideology, similar to 'Communism' or 'wanting to serve in combat units.' It is marked by a generation of new people seeking to mimic and identify with the words of the elders, and voluntarily fill the ranks. Filling the ranks is necessary, because as people get older, and less ideologically pure, they get shoved aside. They 'sell out.' There are lots of anarchists who are older, get married and have kids, work regular jobs. But they tend not to hang out with the intolerant kids and thier self-appointed leaders. They tend to spread anarchist ideas lightly, often without the bit A label. They drive cars and no longer freak out when someone they know bites into a hamburger.... These are the folks who make up the backbone of groups like the Ruckus Society in the U.S., who train people in direct action. They work at groups like Rainforest Action and Greenpeace. They join groups with broader appeal like the Green Party. They found magazines like Adbusters. The debate between leftist currents and anarchism is a great one to have. But remember that all ideologies, expressed as a comprehensive set of ideas, are traps that subsititute for independent thinking, on the one hand, and create an in/out group mentality that makes it easier to be cold and cruel to others who disagree. If the anarchist future is a holier than thou sneer at the less committed and pure, then it is a future of anarchist cults forever indulging in a passion for self-martyrdom. Chad add your comments
