IDF troops enter Ramallah; 22 Palestinians killed in Gaza Strip

By Amos Harel, Amira Hass, Ha'aretz Correspondents and agencies

Israeli troops and tanks moved into the Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank town of Ramallah early Tuesday, killing at least 22 Palestinians, pushing ahead with their largest offensive in 17 months of conflict.

An anti-tank missile was fired Tuesday morning at an Israeli army bulldozer, lightly injuring two IDF soldiers. There were no other Israeli casualties in the raids.

The Israeli offensive continued at full force, retaliation for bloody Palestinian attacks, as U.S. envoy Anthony Zinni prepared to leave for the region to try to achieve a cease-fire. On Monday, Israeli troops swept through the West Bank town of Qalqilyah and the Deheishe refugee camp, questioning more than 1,100 Palestinians and confiscating weapons and explosives.

A military statement early Tuesday said soldiers had left the Deheisheh camp.

IDF tanks rolled toward the sprawling Jabalya refugee camp next to Gaza City early Tuesday after Palestinians fired mortar shells at a Jewish settlement. Witnesses said Israeli helicopter gunships fired at the camp as the tanks moved in.

Doctors at two Gaza hospitals said 22 Palestinians were killed and at least 75 wounded. Most were from Palestinian security forces, they said, and others were civilians.

Dozens of Palestinians, some in pajamas and others on donkey carts, fled the camp for a nearby Gaza City neighborhood.

In a statement, the IDF said the operation was aimed at finding rockets, destroying weapons factories and arresting suspected terrorists.

IDF troops destroyed several buildings in the camp, some used by Palestinian security, and blew up a metal works factory in which Kassam rockets and other weapons were manufactured. Tanks were pulling back but still surrounded the camp, they said.

The Jabalya camp is the largest in the Gaza Strip and one of the most militant. Many of the suicide bombers who have blown themselves up inside Israel during the conflict, killing dozens of Israelis and wounding hundreds, have come from Jabalya and other parts of northern Gaza.

On March 5, gunman Ibrahim Hassouna from Jabalya opened fire at a Tel Aviv restaurant, killing three Israelis and wounding 31 before he was shot dead.

IDF tanks and bulldozers were moving toward his house, residents said, apparently planning to tear it down in retribution.

In Ramallah, the administrative and commercial center for the West Bank, tanks moved in after a daylong buildup of forces on the outskirts.

A senior Israeli army commander, said Israeli forces were forming a wall between Israel and terrorists in the Ramallah area. He said many Palestinian attackers had left Ramallah for Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

In a statement, the military said soldiers also moved into the Amari refugee camp next to Ramallah to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure there. The military said there was no intention of targeting Arafat, who is in Ramallah.

Foreign reporters working in a hotel across from the camp said they came under fire from Israeli soldiers.

Refugee camps a crime Latin
by jerusalem 6:35pm Tue Mar 12 '02

print comment

Refugee camps are a crime. They are supported by the un, us, eu and arab nations. They are havens for terrorism. The un, us and eu are breeders of evil. No other people in the world are still in refugee camps. The true refugees, of whom there are none today, were not allowed to be resettled. In the mean time, the camps have become an axis of evil.

ethnic cleansing is the true evil Hebrew

You talk about refugees as being part of an axis
of evil yet the true evil is the conditions that
create refugees. IN 1948 1 million palestinians
were exiled from their homes during the ethnic
cleansing that coincided with the creation of the
state of Israel. People have remained refugees
because they are waiting to return to their homes
in israel

It's disingenious Latin

to condemn those living in refugee camps _in_ the occupied territories, when it is illegal for non-jews in Israel to buy land, and it's difficult for them to even move around. How, then, could they leave the camps, and where would they go?

Also, you seem to be confused about some logical issues. Perhaps you don't speak English well enough to realize that "crime" is an abstract noun, referring to an action, whereas "refugee camp" is a noun referring to a place.

So, a place is not an action.

Those living in a place are not actions either. Perhaps in your native language (german?) this distinction does not exist. If that's the case, then you can find a reason to murder people, living in a place, because of some complaint about US or UN policy. Most languages, however, are capable of making a distinction between people and abstract nouns like "crime", "policy", and finding justifications for murder in those languages requires a more sophisticated argument.

So you might wish to come up with another excuse.
