Rafah:  Rachel Corrie Murdered by Israeli Army

At about 5.20 pm today Rachel Corrie from Olympia in Washington
State, USA died of her injuries in A-Najar Hospital in Rafah after
being deliberately run over by an Israeli military bulldozer.

Rachel had been working as an ISM activist in Rafah for seven weeks
when she was killed trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian
homes and property in the Hi Salaam area of Rafah.

The confrontation between the ISM and the Israeli Army had been
under way for two hours when Rachel was run over.  Rachel and the
other activists had clearly identified themselves as unarmed
international peace activists throughout the confrontation.

The Israeli Army are attempting to dishonour her memory by claiming
that Rachel was killed accidentally when she ran in front of the
bulldozer.  Eye-witnesses to the murder insist that this is totally
untrue.  Rachel was sitting in the path of the bulldozer as it
advanced towards her.  When the bulldozer refused to stop or turn
aside she climbed up onto the mound of dirt and rubble being
gathered in front of it wearing a fluorescent jacket to look
directly at the driver who kept on advancing.  The bulldozer
continued to advance so that she was pulled under the pile of dirt
and rubble.  After she had disappeared from view the driver kept
advancing until the bulldozer was completely on top of her.  The
driver did not lift the bulldozer blade and so she was crushed
beneath it.  Then the driver backed off and the seven other ISM
activists taking part in the action rushed to dig out her body.  An
ambulance rushed her to A-Najar hospital where she died.

Rachel joins 1,900 Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli
soldiers and settlers since September 2000,

Rachel had been staying in Palestinian homes threatened with illegal demolition, and today Rachel was standing with other non-violent international activists in front of a home scheduled for illegal demolition. According to witnesses, Rachel was run over twice by the Israeli military bulldozer in its process of demolishing the Palestinian home. Witnesses say that Rachel was clearly visible to the bulldozer driver, and was doing nothing to provoke an attack.

The photos below clearly show that Rachel was well marked, had a megaphone, and posed no threat to the bulldozer driver.

Israeli soldiers kill American peace activist

Israeli soldiers kill American peace activist in Rafah
16 March 2003

Israeli soldiers this evening killed an American peace activist from the Grassroots International Protection for Palestinians (GIPP)/ISM in the Al-Salam neighbourhood of Rafah city, in the south of the Gaza Strip.

The girl, Rachel Corey, 23 years old from the state of Washington, was killed while she was trying to prevent Israeli army bulldozers from destroying a Palestinian home. Other foreigners who were with her said the driver of the bulldozer was aware that Rachel was there, and continued to
destroy the house. Initially he dropped sand and other heavy debris on her, then the bulldozer pushed her to the ground where it proceeded to drive over her, fracturing both of her arms, legs and skull. She was transferred to
hospital, where she later died. Another foreigner was also injured in the attack and has been hospitalized - at this stage his nationality is unknown.

Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, from the Palestinian non-governmental network (PNGO) which spearheaded the GIPP campaign said, "The killing of Rachel is a tragedy. We express our sorrow, anger and disgust at this cold blooded
murder and we call for international condemnation of this event, and the ongoing Israeli policy of indiscriminate killings of Palestinians and internationals.

Furthermore it is an extremely dangerous precedent as it means the Israeli army is ready to kill international peace activists in order to frighten them away, so that the army can carry out its crimes against Palestinians without witnesses and with impunity. This is especially dangerous with the impending gulf war. We call for more internationals to come at this terrible time, and not let the Isralei military isolate Palestinians."

Anti-War Protesters Beware
By Associated Press
Associated Press | March 17, 2003

Security forces at Vandenberg Air Force Base may
use ``deadly force'' against protesters if they
infiltrate the military complex if a war starts,
officials said.
Some anti-war activists plan to trespass onto
base grounds in hopes of disturbing Vandenberg's
mission and to vandalize sensitive equipment they
contend helps guide the war effort.

Vandenberg officials revealed Friday that
military security police may shoot to kill, if
necessary, to protect base residents and
machinery.

The directive has always been in existence, but a
base spokeswoman said it is more critical now
that people understand its severity.

``This is not fun and games anymore,'' said Maj.
Stacee Bako. ``We're living in post 9/11. We
don't know what's going to happen with the war
effort in Iraq. These folks have got to realize
their actions. ... They're illegal intruders.''

Military police will use their ``judgment,
experience and training'' to determine if lethal
force is necessary, she said.

``Deadly force can be used when lesser means of
force aren't feasible or have failed, and to
protect (Department of Defense) assets designated
as vital to the national security,'' she
explained.

The deadly force policy will not deter
protesters, said Peter Lumsdaine of the
Vandenberg Action Coalition, one of the
organizers of the planned trespassing.

``I think it does underline that people in the
nonviolent resistance movement are willing to
take some risks,'' Lumsdaine said.

A Guadalupe man jumped onto the base's entrance
sign Friday and sprayed it with 4 ounces of his
own blood in a symbolic gesture of his anti-war
stance. Dennis Apel, 52, later pleaded guilty to
misdemeanor counts of trespassing and vandalism.
He will be sentenced next month in a Santa
Barbara federal court and faces a possible jail
sentence or fine.

``We wanted them to see some blood,'' said Apel,
a member of Guadalupe Catholic Worker, a social
reform movement. ``We wanted them to in some way
visually experience the consequences of what
they're doing.''

Vandenberg has been on heightened alert since the
2001 terrorist attacks, with barricades near
sensitive equipment and tighter access to the
classified installation.

Bako said the security measures, including the
deadly force decree, are necessary because of the
threat of biological weapons.

``It's impossible for us to determine what their
intent is,'' she said. ``Are they protesters? Are
there terrorists in that group and (do) they plan
on killing everyone on base? They all have to be
dealt with as very specific threats, whether
they're vandalizing a sign, crossing the green
(no trespassing) line or infiltrating the
backcountry.''

Must Corrie die twice?
by Greg G 2:35pm Mon Mar 17 '03

print comment

Apparently, Rachel Corrie must die twice: Once under a bulldozer, and once again, based on comments I've seen about this article so far, at the hands of right-wing apologists who shed tears for the tender feelings of armed professionals while despoiling the memory of Corrie's courage.

Rachel Corrie died in protection of humanity. As US forces will, almost undoubtedly, within a few hours commit to a program of mechanized slaughter, it is imperative to our future to recognize what true courage is. She showed it.

this thread, which is a minor shame for me, but a
greater shame for the drive for peace because
they show unequivably the depth of hatred aimed

israeli society.
I do not beleive it helps anyone to hide this
hatred away, let the comments of KPSS and other
SS's be seen for what they are: racist genocidal
hatred.
[However, perhaps this might give the KPss's of
this world pause to thought, that there opinions
are so far beyond acceptable...]

If you clickon the above link, you will be transported to a place where men and women of the American Jewish persuasion make jokes about peace protesters becoming speed bumps. I caution you not to lose your precious tranquillity. Do not rant, rave, tear your hair (as they do at their funerals). It will avail you nothing. Only cold calculated machiavellian political skill will help us now.

Today has been the Fast of Esther. This minor festival commemorates the legendary seduction of King Ahashverosh of Persia by the Jewish vizier's daughter, which prevented the massacre planned by the wicked Haman. On this day Jewish children play pranks, and so do some adults. I imagine the talking fish story was a prank.

They are really cooking on Galei Zahal (israel Army Radio). Esther and her sisters rock. Do not imagine that they will suddenly become weak and impressionable, because they will not. They and their forebears have spent several thousand years perfecting their delusory quasi-national fantasm.

This is only the beginning of Israel's blatant disregard for human life. No, its not the first murder, but, its the first in a series that will be hidden in the U.S. media behind the guise of Iraqi War coverage. If Fox news, to mention just one, was really fair and balance; thier report of Rachel's death would have at least mentioned the eye-witnesses and what they saw. Instead, they reported the incident as an accident saying she fell. Any intelligent person knows that bulldozers are fairly slow moving machines. It seems to me that the driver would have had time to apply the brakes unless Rachel threw herself directly in front it having a running start. Another Israeli geets away with murder (Liberty 2).

Israeli army can be blamed allright
by John Veldhuis 7:53am Tue Mar 18 '03

print comment

The Israeli can be blamed because they don't give a damn about killing civilians. When an Israeli soldier is punished for "unsoldierly" behaviour, like murdering non-combattants or torturing civilans, it is not for the behaviour, but for getting caught.

Home demolitions have nothing to do with protecting the citizens of Israel from terrorists. It is more like a stupid and inhumane act of revenge.

It is on the other hand a good way of creating more anti-Israel emotions.

Who do you think profit by this?

No, not the Palestinians.

Right, the settlers and their racist supporters.

her death is not fair

i'm against any kind of violence.

her eath sound so cruel and odd

but here is the but part...

for more then 2 years, israelis in gaza strip suffering from bombs that palestioans launched on them

why this woman as a woman that "peace" is located so high in her mind and action, why she preffer to take the side of the palestians?

every one knows how cruel is arafat
the fact tha he killed so many people i his life.

in 1985 his organization sent terrorist to take conrol on the "akala laura" ship.

his men in a cruel act, kicked an old disable man into the sea water

since then, the p.l.o organization succeeded to "contribute" just death and cahos into the world.

its kind of hypocracy to blame israel in this conflict.

i believe that the fact that people who "admire" the peace like this woman who died, but preffer to go with the palestian side, its not because they want peace.

and here si my point, they just search for an opportunity to go against israel policy!

so why people wants to go versus israel????

you all know the answer.

but to be honest, i dont know the answer.

in this cruel game.

i hope that the side with more truth spirit, the real peace men, that is the side tha will earn normallity again

She took the poeple's side - those who were occupied. She did not give a damm about Arafat or Sharon - her stand was against war, against occupation, against state teror and with those who did not have the power to protest all.
The Ism as much as I know works both with palestinians and israelians - not taking any side but the side of the oppressed.

Rachel we will never forget you. You were acting in our name, in the name of the voiceless, in the name of the concerned and your example will prevail. We will continue your work and we will expel the opressor from Palestine. The task of the ISM has been corageous and as you fall, hundreds will replace you in the frontline.

The virus of fascism is growing naturally in all those involved in reinvented Israel. Paranoia-addicted cowards do not want international presence in the ghetto. The IDF is one of the most cruel armies in the world, since it is dedicated almost exclusively to punish civilians. They are not real soldiers but circumstantial paranoics easy to provoke and a bunch of criminals able to murder 5-years old children in cold blood. The guy that killed Rachel is ill, as ill are those who still try to give a justification for her assassination. Some Israelis are so stupid that they really believe in the logics of endless war to defend themselves, the only way to stop the ultras in Israel is by attacking the State and the Capital. Get ready to block the roads.

Paralize Apartheid Israel
Rachel Corrie...presente!!!
Sionista huevףn a tomar por culo

not a murder
by avvv 12:44pm Tue Mar 18 '03

The pictures show precisely that the protestor was in a dead spot of the bulldozer driver. Her picture shows that she was hit from something with jags - a flying rock (possibly iron rod for the bulldozer was acting in an area with numerous ruins) and not from the bulldozer's shovel. She obviously wasn't ran over as the activists claimed because in that case she would have been completely crushed and not have only a head injury. When dozens of tons pass over you you die right away. It's impossible that the bulldozer ran over her and came back to ascertaining death.

Maybe that activists wanted to have political fortunes by getting hit by a bulldozer (she had nothing to look fore in a fire zone during a military operation), she only thought it will end up in an injury and not death. No doubt the driver didn't mean to run over her and it was a mistake.
The accident happened because D9 bollduzer is made for massive and rough construction works and therefore it has limited visibility. It is not designed to have people running around its wheels, especially in the dead spots.

that dozer isn't a D9. The D9s are indeed gigantic and have deliberately poor visibility to make them even more terrifying, but that is an ordinary dozer with an ordinary front and center type windscreen. And it did drive right into her, and it did push her under, and it crushed her skull and her ribs, and her clinical death did not occur for some time, and that is normal. sorry fella, but you might as well face reality.

"Punish Anti-War Anarchists"

Posted by Kevin Willmann
Friday, March 21, 2003

Now that the war to liberate Iraq has begun,
our nation should put aside partisan differences
and come together as one behind our president and
our military.

Unfortunately, with some people, that is not
happening.

Weג€™ve seen it in comments over the
last two days by several elected officials in our
government. These people are so blinded by their
dislike of George W. Bush that they resort to
cheap partisan shots at him. They do this while
our men and women in uniform are risking their
lives to free Iraq and disarm a rogue regime.

I believe the disharmony theyג€™ve
exhibited has inspired nations like France
publicly to hinder our diplomacy. Likewise, such
rhetoric has inspired the alleged anti-war
movement to continue its protests, and even
escalate its tactics.

Today, these groups went out into the
streets again, attempting to shut down commerce
in San Francisco's financial district, as well as
other cities across the nation. As I write this,
a near riot is taking place in San Francisco.

Protesters at one intersection held banners
with the photo of Che Guevara and chanted,
''Bush, you liar. We're going to set your ass on
fire.'' Amazingly, this was reported on
SFGate.com.

I thought these people were supposed to be
''peace activists.'' That incident didnג€™t
sound very peaceful.

As someone who has counterprotested these
supposed ''peace'' activists, I can tell you they
are anything but peaceful. They are violent,
vitriolic, and hateful. Iג€™ve heard many of
them use racist remarks to describe other
counterprotesters, yet they claim to be against
racism. They call America a ''terrorist nation''
and compare George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler. They
say this is ''dissent'' and they are only
''questioning our government.''

Today, the true face of the so-called
''peace movement'' is coming out in their acts of
civil disobedience. When people chain themselves
to poles, block traffic, and vandalize property,
they are not acting peaceful. Their actions are
not ''freedom of speech'' or ''dissent.''
Instead, these actions are a form of domestic
terrorism.

In a time of war, it is also sedition.

Freedom of expression ends when it becomes
criminal and infringes on the rights of other
people. Additionally, as our terror threat level
has been elevated, these people present a public
security threat. Law enforcement gets diverted
from its real duty of protecting their
communities. At the same time, it takes time and
resources away from investigating and preventing
possible acts of terrorism.

Even worse, the actions of these mobs only
embolden people like Saddam Hussein and threaten
to hurt the resolve of our military currently in
harmג€™s way.

Unfortunately, the policy in punishing these
people has been one of ''catch and release.''
There is no real punishment for these
demonstrators. It is only a small fine and they
are released back on the streets to raise more
havoc.

This should change now! These hellions
should pay a heavy penalty other than a slap on
the wrist for disrupting San Francisco and other
cities. The organizers of these groups should
pay an even heavier price for stirring up the
emotions of their groups. They do not have the
right to interrupt the daily flow of life of this
country. They must not be allowed to get away
with disrupting our communities.

Avi: "it is not fair"

"but here is the but part...
for more then 2 years, israelis in gaza strip suffering from bombs that palestioans launched on them"

Well, hold your horses. Why the hell are YOU Israelis in the Gaza Strip? Have you heard that it is occupied territories? Or did this news not arrive at the Kibbutz you are in yet?

"why this woman as a woman that "peace" is located so high in her mind and action, why she preffer to take the side of the palestians?

Because they are the ones who possessed the land before you arrived from Europe 55 years ago. They are the ones who have been killed, maimed, injured, expelled and oppressed continuously ever since. They are the VICTIMS, and you are the occupying colonialists. It is not a preference to take the Palestinas' side, it is the only right moral stance. Taking your side would be rooting for the criminal. Is this hard to understand?

"every one knows how cruel is arafat
the fact tha he killed so many people i his life."

No we don't. First, we don't care about Arafat but the people, and he is one of them if they say so, not you. Second, the balance sheet for murders, assassinations, and other violence is in favor of Arafat, not Israel(is). There is no comparsion between the numbers killed in Palestinian actions and Israeli actions. And, besides, it is their land which YOU occupy, and they have the right to defend it and to claim back what was taken from them by force. You had 55 years to peacfully give it back as required by UN resolutions and by international law. You violated and continue to violate every single one of the. Regardless, the answer to you complaints is very simple: If you don't like their resistance, give them back what you took from them and/or leave. Else, shut up and die quietly as as time and circumstance allow.

"in 1985 his organization sent terrorist to take conrol on the "akala laura" ship.
his men in a cruel act, kicked an old disable man into the sea water
since then, the p.l.o organization succeeded to "contribute" just death and cahos into the world.
its kind of hypocracy to blame israel in this conflict."

It is even more hypocritical to claim that we are hypocrites. What you say is just background noise, a tactic to fuzz the charge against you. Listen, it is very simple. If God did not exist, then everything is allowed, even murder, and YOU have killed the Palestinian GOD. You did not just kill their God, but you also killed His angels and every little creature that served Him. Is there a possibility of you ever admitting that you were wrong, and asking for forgiveness? It is the only thing that would finally end the conflict within you and that you imposed and still are imposing on the poor Palestinians.

"i believe that the fact that people who "admire" the peace like this woman who died, but preffer to go with the palestian side, its not because they want peace.
and here si my point, they just search for an opportunity to go against israel policy!"

Yeah, what a great insight! Those damn idiots die because it gives them great pleasure to spite Israel. Vah, Vah, Vah. This is on bar with the theory of relativity as one of the greatest Jewish contributions to our understanding of the universe. I will recommend you for an Nobel Idiot Prize.

"so why people wants to go versus israel????
you all know the answer.
but to be honest, i dont know the answer."
in this cruel game.
i hope that the side with more truth spirit, the real peace men, that is the side tha will earn normallity again"

Thank you for not being sure. So, why the hell are you killing them for? Is it just for sport? Or is it because your friend on the Kibbutz thinks that the Palestinians should be killed?
