Unfortunately, his political preferences are disoriented. His chosen allies, enemies of both Palestinians and Jews, as well as of all working people, are suspect. Shamir makes clear that he will support any political force, no matter how vile, if it will oppose Zionism. He praises Saddam Hussein as a strong "bad guy" who is needed to oppose Israel. In a public statement brought to our attention by Tim Hall of Struggle magazine, Shamir cheers the French vote for the fascist Jean-Marie Le Pen, who is hostile to both Jewish and Arab immigrants. (Shamir agrees about the need to limit immigration.) In these remarks, which anticipate his coziness with nazis in "Rock Of Dissent", Shamir gives advice to them of ways to appear less offensive. In "Rock of Dissent", Shamir adopts an "enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend" posture in an attempt to fool the naive and neutralize the militant. We repudiate him.Israel Shamir lies. Arguing that Palestinians and the Palestinian solidarity movement should be grateful for the backing from them, he denies the National Alliance is nazi or white supremacist. This is important for his argument, given that white supremacists in the United States are known to despise Arabs and Muslims. But the temporary, opportunistic support of racist extremists for Arabs in other countries does not change this. Shamir's denial that the National Alliance is racist runs counter to documented facts. The National Alliance has been the largest nazi group in North America for years. Founded by the late William Pierce in 1974, it has built an organization of over a thousand members. Pierce's novel "The Turner Diaries" has served as a blueprint for many white supremacist mass murders, from those of the Fort Bragg nazi gang "The Order" to Timothy McVeigh's Oklahoma City bombing. Furthermore, with the acquisition of Resistance Records and Nordland Records, two well know white supremacist labels, the National Alliance not only earns millions of dollars annually from music sales but, more importantly, enacts a greatly expanded involvement in the fascist youth subculture. Finally, the National Alliance maintains one of the most technologically sophisticated web sites on the Internet, bringing hate to a mass audience. Shamir's facile dismissal of these virulent murderers and would-be murderers ("Now, nobody likes Nazis") is a contemptible understatement.Shamir vilifies the U. S. Arab anti-fascists who call for participation in the demonstration against the nazis. On no evidence whatsoever, in a bizarre claim they are not even Arab, he calls them a front group for Jews, part of a "crypto-Jewish" "network". He falsely implies that they and other members of the anti-fascist movement have not opposed Zionism in the past. In fact, the activists who wrote the call for Arab opposition to the National Alliance are indeed Arabs. We are long-time activists for the Palestinian cause who do not intend to fight on anyone's behalf but our own. Our view is that the National Alliance is a very dangerous and sophisticated nazi organization that must be stopped. We will not stand by to allow the Palestinian issue to be exploited for racist ends--not only against Jews but against all immigrants, including Arabs and Muslims. Furthermore, the anti-fascist, anti-Zionist movement has worked in mutual support and solidarity, with numerous examples of public opposition to the State of Israel's brutal, illegal occupation of Palestinian land, including, in New York City, at the most recent Salute to Israel Day parade. But anti-fascist anti-Zionists are united in yet another area: against anti-Semitism. We will not dehumanize or denigrate any group of human beings for the noble cause of Palestinian liberty. We will not ally ourselves with those who do. We reject Shamir's notion that fascists, nazis and racists are acceptable if they manufacture a reason to support the cause of Palestinian liberty. We are aware that Shamir has become notorious among people of principle for explicit anti-Jewish statements. We stand with them in opposition to him. Shamir argues that pro-Israeli U. S. Jews are more influential than U. S. Nazis. This is true, for now. Yet, all around us, we see cities and towns infested with racism. Racism against Jews. Racism against blacks. Against Hispanics, Asians, South Asians, Arabs and Muslims. Hatemongering and institutional racism are far more widespread than support for Zionism. The National Alliance understands this. In a climate of governmental and social hostility, amid everyday problems of poverty, homelessness, drug abuse and police brutality, the nazis appeal through his widespread racial tension in an attempt to expand their ranks. The fascism of white racists, and of all those who advance their cause, is a threat to any "non white" people, as well as to women, queers, and people with disabilities. It is a threat to their declared enemies--liberals, progressives and anarchists. It is a threat to the empowerment of the working classes. Shall we wait to oppose the National Alliance until their sadistic redistribution of power becomes more of a threat? Unfortunately, far-right groups like the NA have been some of the most consistent and articulate opponents of a wider war. I am literally aghast to find myself on the same side of an issue as these people--and to agree with their analysis that the war is about ethnic politics more than defense, oil, or hegeomy. If the polite, leftist explanations about oil and hegemony were true, the military would be in favor of this while in fact, the Joint Chiefs of Staff seem to be opposed to a wider war. I voted for Gore/Lieberman in 2000 and until 911 was slightly left of center. I would prefer to remain on the left but find the left is no longer a powerful and articulate proponent of my interests. It is ironic that the "progressives" in our country like Gore and Lieberman are for more killing while the American Nazis are opposing it. The world has been turned on its head. Please understand that I find the NA view of Jews and Judaism to be weird and paranoid. In fact, certain aspects of Judaism are admirable: people like Moshe Menuhin and Israel Shahak derived great inspiration from the Hebrew prophet's vision of social justice. I am familiar with them and do have respect for them although I don't agree with everything they think. They were the only ones who showed up when I organized a leafletting campaign against the Iraq sanctions in college. The "National Alliance" is not representative in any way of ordinary Americans of European origin, perplexed and confused by globalization. It is also quite different from "right-wing" organizations in Europe. The unwritten agreement is that the "neo-Nazis" will get publicity like no other little group of adolescents could ever dream of, in exchange for providing the ADL with exactly the photos they want. In this case, photos that show that the "real" force behind the Palestinians is not the thirst for justice, but an eternal anti-Semitic plot to exterminate anybody who happens to have had a Jewish great-grandmother. Hitler reborn, Amalek, the kids from Brazil and all the rest. This is the point that the "anti-Fascist" protestors, alas, fail to understand. They take these "neo-Nazis" at their face value, as a real threat. However I am also a little worried that Israel Shamir too seems to take the NA folk for what they claim to be: people who may have the wrong ideas, but at least are genuinely on the side of the Palestinians. They are not. They are people who are perfectly aware of the damage they will do to the Palestinians by holding this demonstration, but think the publicity their tiny group will get is well worth it. But these groups can exist to a large extent because there are no *reputable* groups to address concerns about globalization and other issues. After 911, I started reading the websites of some of these rightwing groups. Their pervasive racism, personal hostility to immigrants ( as opposed to critiques of immigraton policy), and unceasing vulgarity sickened me. But they also addressed the interests of low-income workers who now need to speak Spanish to get a job as a store clerk, of families threatened by crime who cannot afford to live in gated communities, of mothers whose sons joined the military and must now sacrifice themselves to some insane mission in the Middle East. And they address these issues in concrete, unambiguous terms. This is not a defense of the NA or other similar groups. It is a criticism of mainstream political parties for ignoring the interests of some of the most vulnerable people in American society. Dear Shamir, You are talking about the people who organize this rock-concert as if they were an authentic political movement of far-right orientation. Have You ever taken into account the hypothesis that this might not be the case ? have You - facts at hand - ever thought about the possibility that their performances are being staged and funded by branches of the government in order to discredit the known organizations and grassroot-movements which oppose the Middle East policy of the United States ? We in Europe have a long experience with these folks and it is no wonder at all that they are showing up in this moment with these slogans. Have You ever investigated into their biographies, into their links to the secret services ? Well, when the zealous Minister for the Interior, Otto Schilly, wanted to get the German neo-Nazi party of Horst Mahler suppressed on the grounds of it's inconstitutional political goals, he got an ugly surprise: at the beginning of this year, the Supreme Court in Germany rejected the request of the Government to hold trial against the neo-Nazi-party NPD, after the investigations ordered by the Court had brought to light that all, but virtually all of the party's leading representatives where themselves on the payroll of the German secret services, hence they had acted withing the responsibility of the Minister of Interiors ! The German right-wing extremist's head, Horst Mahler, has himself a thirty-year record of the murkiest imaginable cooperation with the secret services. He has always acted under the eyes of the police, even when he was still the legal counselor of Bader-Meinhof-group some thirty years ago. People officially wanted by the police went in and out of his lawyer's office, the contract signed to hire motorscooter with which the General Attorney of the Federal Republic of Germany was killed in 1977, had been handed out by Mahler's office. It is important to bear in mind the strong international cooperation between these movements: whenever the German judicial authorities draw up an arrest-warrant against one of these neo-Nazi thugs (I am referring to homicide-cases, not to simple rioting), the guy quickly and quietly disappears to the United States. There is more than one good reason why the USA are opposing any idea of an International Penal Court: they want to retain the possibility of giving safe harbour to the agents provocateurs of their own international network of destabilizers. Horst Mahler showing up, as he did in 2000, as a historian ready to lead a team of "researchers" against the Holocaust-paradigm, is a downright joke. When Shamir loses control of his prose and starts ranting about Jewish control of the world, it is irritating to me too. I put this aside, however, when I weigh it against the fact that no one has written with more poetry about the Palestinian people, with more sympathy for their situation, and often, with entirely novel insights. I have benefited from some of his ideas, and I hope, eventually, he will be willing to benefit from some of ours and hoe his row in a straighter line. Many years ago people were locked in a bank vault in Stockholm for many days by their captors. Their rescuers were shocked to learn that they had developed great sympathy for their captors to the point of defending them. While I agree with you that we must form stronger ties amongst the many communities against Zionism, we must not get that struggle confused with an attack on Judaism. As you know, they are two very separate issues. I would like to see more people join the former and none in the latter. The struggle against Zionism IS a just struggle against oppression. From Shamir Dear friends, I am very grateful for your responses and friendly critique. This is the way to form an opinion: when all views are discussed, in polite and friendly way. While I tend to agree with Miguel, Susanne and Miriam, there is an important point noticed by Jessica. Even if the leadership of the NA would be totally corrupt agents of FBI and Zionists, they would still attract ordinary folks who feel grievance, who reject war, who support Palestine but do not fit into the Leftist bunch. These guys will come to concert, and it is important that they should get their opportunity to meet some good people in non-confrontational way. I am not worried that they (or Mahler group) are infiltrated by the enemy. The bottom line is not known to anybody. The German HQ of WWI was sure they bought Lenin, but at the end, Communism won, and they lost. Do not consider these people totally lost, as they can be regained. Nothing is altogether bad, guys of the Rock bands aren't, nor is Talmud. The Talmud teaches, Jesus came to Rabbis and wished to repent, but they did not listen and pushed him away. Americans can understand it as much as anybody. If they do not think that all Jews enjoy killing Palestinian kids, surely they won't think all Palestinians support Nazis. With all my sympathy to Trotskyites, they have tendency of being over-choosy in their liaisons, and that is why they remained a multitude of small and quarrelsome groups. This Trotskyite tendency is a problem of the Left, and one should be aware of it. I do not call upon the Palestinians and their friends to join the NA or even the concert. But I do propose to take a less confrontational stand, to try to preach to their folks and to interact with them. Main argument of Miriam and Miguel is that "it will be used by the adversary". But this 'fear of Jews' (re St John aptly recalled by Sobran) should not turn us into enforcers of the Jewish agenda. Similarities between the Palestinian & American situations by Mark Salotte 10:57am Sun Aug 18 '02 print comment I read through this discussion with interest, especially the responses Israel forwarded here. As an organizer with Anti-Racist Action, I was tempted to dismiss 'Rock of Dissent' on first reading. Not having been familiar with Mr. Shamir before, I went back and read a few of his articles. This is an interesting discussion, and one which has always been hard to have in America. I appreciate people's civility and talking about reality instead of all the ideological constructs that confuse us. There are a lot of perspectives here: left/right, nationalist/internationalist, colonizer/subject, and people with just about every possible combination of these - and some whose perspective changes drastically in different situations. The articles I read of Shamir's were about as good a perspective on the Palestinian situation as anyone could expect. Why then is he coming down on the exact opposite side of the apartheid question in America, or in Europe? Believe me, I live here, apartheid is real in any major North American city as it is in Palestine. The descendents of Africans brought here as slaves still live in ghettoes without basic services. What little community power exists is everywhere subordinate to the ruling system thats not much changed from the original genocidal settler project... I don't know how to break down all the problems I have with Shamir's take on the National Alliance as a useful ally for the Palestinian struggle. It seems like a problem of basic humanity to me - if he can't identify with oppressed people everywhere, it makes me question how real his stance on Palestinians is? Saying that the "white nationalists" have nowhere near the political power that the Zionists do is meaningless and deceptive. The USA is founded and run on a program of "white" supremacy, just as "Israel" is on Zionism. If, say, some obscure ultra-right wing Israeli pro-settler group of a couple hundred people offered words of support for some struggle I was involved in, would it be honest or principled for me to accept that, and explain it away by saying they have nowhere near the power of the American racist power structure? A story to compare this to is the story about how when Bernadette Devlin from the Irish republican movement came to the u.s., she was given the key to the city of New York by the Irish-American power structure running the city - who were the same cops, politicians, and corrupt union bosses that for decades had been holding down the Black and Boriqueno struggles. She saw right through that & gave the key to the Black Panther Party. I also question Shamir's statement that ARA - or any of the groups he slags - are fighting on behalf of the "Jewish lobby". That's something our neo-nazi enemies say about us, true, but they see a Jew behind everything that doesn't fit their worldview. I'm surprised anyone fell for it. One point I should bring up is that we tried to hold a "Rock Against Racism" concert in Philadelphia earlier this year, which was shut down by the Anti-Defamation League (the premier Zionist organization in this country), who testified to federal agencies that we were 'violent extremists' and a 'hate group'. Yet to this date, the ADL has done nothing whatsoever to shut down the "Rock Against Israel". The reality is that neo-Nazis and Zionists feed off each other. Acting on Shamir’s advice would only strengthen this notion. In other circumstances, it would be wise to let Shamir kick up all the dirt he wants in his sandbox. The reality is that we have a responsibility to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people by all necessary means that would not harm our cause and set it back. This means that we have to tirelessly combat Zionist efforts to legitimize the barbaric treatment of the Palestinians, efforts that Shamir wants us to confirm by allying ourselves to organized antisemites. I became a fluent speaker of the Russian language in college, and I learned most of my Russian from Jews who emigrated from there.
