On October 7, a group of animal rights activists went out to the streets of Jerusalem to demonstrate against the ritual of atonement in Jerusalem, on the eve of the day of atonement. ![]() an action against the ritual of Atonement/הפגנה כנגד מנהג הכפרות
The ritual, which take place the day before the day of atonement, consists of holding a rooster by its feet and spinning it in the air for 3 rounds over one's head. Right after that the rooster is being slaughtered, on the spot, by the same person, and that way his sins, it is believed, are being transfered into the body of the slaughtered rooster. According to one of the demonstrators, Effi Berner “It took only a few minutes before threats were delivered against us, and even some physical violence by the Orthodox Jews who have attended the place”. Although witnessing the assaults, the police did hold or detained any of the violent persons. Many threats were heard against the demonstrators, like: “If it hadn't been for the police, I would have smacked you a couple long time ago”, “do you want me to turn my cigarette off on you?”, “go a way”, go help Gilaad Shalit, what do you care if animals are slaughtered?”, and some, as mentioned, started physical assaults. At one stage, the head of a slaughtered rooster was thrown on a demonstrator, who did not notice who did that. The police threatened that the next time it happens, they will shut the place down (something that would never really happen, as we all know). The Demo started at 5 PM and towards 7PM the cops started brutally pushing the demonstrators using violence, and when the demonstrators shouted “hey, what's going on?”, the police applied more force and took the megaphone to the ground. In spite of the violence against them, the demonstrators insisted on keeping their protest until 8PM. Reporting from the demo, Effi Berner sees it as a proof that the one who has no compassion – has no compassion towards anyone. “The slaughterers have proved that he who hasn't got in his heart compassion for animals and who can hurt and murder them – has no compassion for humans, as well, and is capable of hurting other people, and a menace to society as a whole”. he says, “they also proved that there's no religious, moral or traditional principle standing in front of their minds – just simple plain greed and savage ferocity”. The demonstrators pointed to the fact that in all through history many rabbinical religious authorities have already expressed their disgust with regard to the ritual being done with a rooster. They refer to Yossef Karo, Author of “H-AASHULCHAN H-AARUCH”, who wrote that “this costume being done at atonement day to slaughter a rooster over every and each male boy and say the proverbs this must be avoided”. Symbolic atonement, they suggest, should be done through atonement redemption (charity). This, they claim, is morally superior and preferable from a social perspective. “Violence is violence,” said one of the demonstrators, an activist in SHEVI (animal liberation Israel), “whether inflicted on other humans, or towards the animals; whether it is the eve of the day of atonement – or any other day. “The public must eventually pick a side here: either the side of justice, compassion and respect for life, or that of violence and cruelty”. We call the public to visit our website (www.free.org.il) and witness weight and scale of the injustice we fight against. We call the public to consider real absolution. No one can allow his soul to take part in the structural, industrial and systematical torture, abuse, and murder of innocent animals”. The topic is still" idiot spammers" Jordan. Don't try to change the subject since we're referring to you! We can't talk about anything else since you don't know anything about Israel or "facts" (which you seem to make up as you go along).
