No, It's Not Anti-Semitic
by Judith Butler in LRB
4:11pm Sun Aug 17 '03

What do we make of Jews such as myself, who are emotionally invested in the state of Israel, critical of its current form, and call for a radical restructuring of its economic and juridical basis precisely because we are invested in it? It is always possible to say that such Jews have turned against their own Jewishness. But what if one criticises Israel in the name of one's Jewishness, in the name of justice, precisely because such criticisms seem 'best for the Jews'? Why wouldn't it always be 'best for the Jews' to embrace forms of democracy that extend what is 'best' to everyone, Jewish or not? I signed a petition framed in these terms, an 'Open Letter from American Jews', in which 3700 American Jews opposed the Israeli occupation, though in my view it was not nearly strong enough: it did not call for the end of Zionism, or for the reallocation of arable land, for rethinking the Jewish right of return or for the fair distribution of water and medicine to Palestinians, and it did not call for the reorganisation of the Israeli state on a more radically egalitarian basis. It was, nevertheless, an overt criticism of Israel.

Closed Military Home
by Rona Even
2:00PM Mon Aug 14 '03

Yesterday afternoon 20 Israelis, Palestinians, and Internationals were evicted by the IDF from what was Mascha camp's third location, the Amer family's home. The IDF declared the area a 'closed military zone', threatened the activists with arrest, dismantled the tent, and finally warned Hani Amer that further activist presence on his property will result in his home suffering similar fate as the tent -- the activists left the area.

The order to leave camp originated from a security guard of the construction company building the particular section of the 'apartheid wall' that is planned to encircle the Amer residence, leaving them in what one activist called "a precarious position". The land on which the Amer family home stands only to remain a no-man's-land, a similar fate 11,700 other Palestinians are facing; separated from their village and surrounded by 8 meter high walls at a distance of 20 meters from their home it is likely the Amer family will be forced to abandon the home eventually.

A Case for Hizbollah?
by Ran Ha-Cohen
11:18am Thu Aug 14 '03

So here we go again, it seems. Blood-thirsty Arabs -- Lebanese fundamentalists of the Hizbollah, "the Party of God" -- bombed the Israeli town of Shlomi (10.8), killing a 15-year-old boy and injuring several others. Terrorist attack on civilians, three years after Israel has withdrawn its very last soldier from Lebanese soil. Isn't it the ultimate proof for the inherent terrorism of the Arabs, the decisive evidence that no peace can be made with Muslims? If you follow the media, it probably is. If you take a closer look at the facts -- well, not quite.

All Mascha Activists Released
by Rona
3:00PM Mon Aug 7 '03

Vigil for 418 Villages and Mascha Yesterday 24 Israeli activists involved with the Mascha camp carried out a non-violent direct action in order to stop the construction of the apartheid wall that is set to separate the Amer family home from the village of Mascha and effectively force them to abandon it. The activist sat on the ground in front of the bulldozer but soon soldiers came and arrested them along with an AP journalist who was covering the event. The activists spent the day at the Ariel police station before being released at around 1:30am. About twelve hours later Nazeeh, the only activist from the previous action still in detention was released . Both Internationals and Israelis agreed to sign an agreement forbidding to enter the Occupied Territories, for varying time frames, in exchange for their release.

Also last night, a vigil was held for the 418 Palestinian villages distroyed in '48 as well as the Mascha arrestees.

Bulldozers Roll For Separation Wall, Palestinians, Internationals, and Israelis Detained
by Various
7:30PM Mon Aug 5 '03

goat pen being buldozed This morning in Mas'ha, 150 Israeli soldiers interrupted a demonstration and are now holding Palestinian, Israeli and International protesters, who were protecting farm buildings from being demolished by IDF bulldozers. For three and a half months there has been a continuous camp set up in an olive orchard just outside the village, organized by an ad hoc group.

The site buldozed today, which includes a home and farm buildings lies in the way of the proposed "wall of separation", being built by the IDF as a security measure against acts of terrorism.

Approximately 45 protesters from the demonstration are being "detained" at Ariel Prison, and at least 3 are now officially arrested. Nazeh Shalabi, the land owner of the site where the camp was held is being detained in isolation from the international detainees by police.

On ISM, 'The Separation Barrier', and non-Violent Protest
by Various
7:11am Sun Aug 3 '03

Non-violent strategies have always been about choosing key issues that symbolize oppression and confronting them head on, in a peaceful, but determined manner. That is what ISM is doing, and it can be provocative. Read Gandhi, read King. Israeli soldiers choose whether they will respond to nonviolent acts against oppresive systems like the Wall in a humane manner or a brutal manner. Usually they choose to respond with force. This is their decision, and they get into the news when they choose this way. If the soldiers instead chose to respond in a humane manner, it wouldn't make the news.

On the Arrest of the Abnaa el Ballad Leaders
by Various
9:04pm Sat
Aug 2 '03

Israeli police stormed a summer camp for Palestinian youth yesterday, and arrested fourteen of the organizers, after the camp had been accused of incitement against Israel in a TV report on Wednesday. The camp was organized by the Al Balad Cultural Association in the Arab village of Kabul in northern Israel, and was due to end this Sunday. At a court hearing today, the police could present no evidence of incitement. The presiding judge declared that four of the arrested should remain in court until Monday, to allow police to find evidence for the case.

The State of Human Rights in Israel 2003
by Naama Yashuvi of ACRI
8:07pm Wed Jul 23 '03

The purpose of this document is to warn of the trends and actions in the last year that point to a worrying and dangerous atmosphere in the country. The government`s actions call into question the very basis of democratic principles, the social fabric, and the foundation of human rights in Israel.

To Bi or not to Bi: Avnery and Shamir on the Question of a Bi-National State
by Uri Avnery vs. Israel Shamir
8:54am Tue Jul 22 '03

No wonder that in these dark times, the bi-national idea is raising its head again in some Israeli left-wing circles. It's a beautiful and noble idea, imbued with faith in humanity. But, like Isaiah's prophecy, it is an idea for the days of the messiah. If it has any realistic chance at all, this may come in another two or three generations. In the meantime, it is indeed an escape from reality. A dangerous escape, as we shall see.

To read the whole Avnery article, click here.

Why it is better for Palestinians to be locked up in their small enclaves than to be equal citizens of the whole of Palestine? In a mental somersault, Avnery breaks a new ground in public discourse and proclaims: Jews can't live with non-Jews. The Jew and the Goy are like wolf and lamb; if you want the Wolf dwell with the Lamb, please provide a fresh lamb every day. There was, I understand, a slight difference of opinion who of the twain is a wolf, (classic Zionists clamoured the lamb skin), but Avnery leaves us in no doubt: while sojourning together, the Goy will lose to the Jew. In his own words, "In a joint state, if it were to be set up, the Jews would dominate the economy and most other aspects of the state, and try very hard to preserve that situation."

The Complex Art of Simulation
by Tanya Reinhart
5:19am Thu Jun 12 '03

The Israeli public discourse has been storming around "Sharon's revolutionary change of mind". The extensive debate on his psyche focuses on the question whether he has changed from the inside, or whether it is all just U.S. pressure. Either way, Sharon has turned suddenly into the beloved leader of the Israeli "peace camp". The right wing is furious and the peace camp celebrates, yet both sides agree on the substance of what they perceive has occurred: Sharon's Israel has already taken the fatal historical step, and gave up on the occupation.

The Truth of Mohammed al-Dura: A Response to James Fallows
by Adam Rose
9:13am Tue Jun 3 '03

Whether or not a particular 12-year-old boy died at the hands of Israeli soldiers, the image of Mohammed al-Dura is an authentic symbol of the Israeli occupation. Avoiding this harsh truth does a disservice to Israel and the Jewish people, as well as to the Palestinians, hinders the quest for peace, and endangers everyone if the wrong lessons are drawn from the al-Dura incident.
